Beijing subway users reach a record 3 million; 418 new carriages to be added

The Beijing subway system carried 2.9122 million people on November 30, surpassing the record number set on November 16.

Line 5 transported a record-breaking 486,200 people, while Line 13 and the Batong Line also hit the record books, respectively carrying 388,200 people and 169,500 people.

According to Beijing Subway’s operating plan, the minimum train interval of Line 1 will be two and a half minutes in the first quarter of next year, and before next June, the minimum train interval of Line 2, Line 13 and the Batong Line will be shortened again by 15 to 20 seconds and the current 4 minute travel time of Line 5 will be compressed to 3 minutes. Moreover, the minimum train interval of Line 10, which is under construction now, will be 3 minutes, shorter than the original planned 4 minutes, when it launches next year.

In order to supply the transportation power needed for shorter train intervals and simultaneously improving the comfort of the subway, the traffic department is now drawing up new plans to add more carriages. Under the new scheme, Line 2 will receive 144 new carriages, Line 13 will have 112 more cars, the Batong Line will have 84 additional carriages, Line 5 will see 42 more, and Line 10 will have 36 more carriages joining its team. Furthermore, the marshalling plan for the Batong Line and Line 13 will be changed into 6-carriages from the current 4-carriage standings.

Restrained by the capability bottleneck of the return route, Line 1 will not receive new carriages this time.
