Beijing volunteers joins City Games for Olympic rehearsal

WUHAN, Central China, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Ten Beijing Olympics volunteers serve in the City Games to enhance their skills as a rehearsal for the Beijing Olympic Games.

Wearing blue uniforms with nameplates, these special volunteers work in the press center, the official website and security team.

"It is a good chance for them to learn how to solve the problems and how to deal with the accidents. It is more effective than the training courses in Beijing," said Yang Bin, deputy secretary-general of the Beijing Volunteering Association.

Yang told Xinhua that about 100 Beijing Olympics volunteers had served in several sports events including the Doha Asian Games, the Special Olympic Games and a series of the pre-Games events for the Beijing Games.

"After the City Games, they will give lectures to other volunteers in universities in Beijing and share their experiences," added Yang.

All of the Beijing Olympics volunteers in the City Games come from the universities and colleges in Beijing.

Wang Weining, studying in the Beijing Technology University, told Xinhua that there were about 400 volunteers for the Games in her university.

"I will go back to Beijing as soon as the City Games is over, because I am going to do some volunteering work in the judo event," she said.

Up till now, a total of 870 people have been selected as the first batch of volunteers for the 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

More then 700,000 people have applied so far to be volunteers for the Beijing Games, which need 100,000 volunteers. Recruitment is expected to end before May 2008.
