With an area of 473 square kilometers and a population of 2.92 million, Chaoyang houses many foreign embassies and serves as Beijing's important window for international exchanges, a sport and cultural center and an industry and high-tech base.
Among the 31 Beijing-based Olympic competition venues, 13 are located at Chaoyang. "We are responsible for the renovation and expansion of 17 percent of Olympic venues, 42 percent of the new venues to be built from scratch, 54 percent of road construction, 80 percent of the urban bridge construction and a number of Olympics-related environmental projects," he told a press conference at Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground on Monday.
He said most of the undertakings have to be completed by the end of 2007, and progress has been made in all the projects as scheduled.
The district has set up 10 working groups covering security, transport and other areas to ensure the logistics operation, Chen said.
Shen Naihong, director of Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground, which is located at the district, told the press that the venue will be ready for check and acceptance on August 7 for the August 13-19 FIVB Beach Volleyball Women's Challenger.
At the moment, he said, all members of the staff have been assigned to their posts and all volunteers started their work on August 5.
So far, 24 teams from 13 countries and regions have registered to take part in the event and 500 members of the press have been accredited. TV broadcast will start on August 15.
Since ticketing began online on July 24, more than 4,500 tickets have been sold, of which 3,500 bought by sponsors.
