YUN JU TEMPLE


Yun Ju Temple is located at the foot of Bai Dai Mt within the bountary of Fangshan district, south-west of Beijing, 70 kms from the city. Shangfang Mt, on its east Ju Mar River on its west. The occupied area is over 6000km2. It is a treasure house with ancient Buddhist cultural characteristic composes of Yun Ju Templ stone sutra caves pagoda group of Tang and Liao Dynastice. The state council announced that Yun Ju Temple was the key relic protection spot on March 4th, 1961. It was chosen as the world first relic spot of Beijing tourism in 1992.
Yun Ju Temple Dynasty was built at the end of Sui Dynasty and at the beginning of Tang Dynasty. Through the repair of successive dynasties it has 5 courtyards and 6 palaces with sidehalls on each side emperor's palace and monk rooms. It is built against the mountain and broad in scale. The south pagoda and the north pagoda stand facing each other.
Yun Ju Temple is a place of Buddhist sutra assemble. In the temple there are stone sutra paper sutra and wooden plate sutra rated as the 3-superb works.
The stone sutra carving bagan in the year of Da-ye12 of Sui Dynasty(605). Monk Jing-wem carved the sutra on the stone to uphold the Buddhist statute books. Sutra carving undertakings went through 6 dynasties-Sui Tang Liao Jin Yuan and ming lasting 1039 years. 1122 sections with 3572 volumes and 14278 pieces in all were finished.Such carving scale and its long history are certainly the heroic undertaking of the world cultural history. It can compare favourably with the famous Great Wall abd Beijing-Hangzhou Canal. It is the rare and treasure cultural legacy of the world and qualified as being the Dunghuang of Beijing and the most excellent of the world.
The present storage of the paper Buddhist sutra is 22000 volumes which are printed books and handwritten ones of Ming Dynast. It amount is rarely seen in all the famous temples of the country and abroad.
The wooden plate sutra carved in the year 11 of Yong Zheng(1733) to the year 3 of Qian Long (1738), are 7700. It can be rated as the utmost of the wooden plate sutra books in our country.
Stone sutra Mt is 450 metres above the sea level with 9 sutra caves on the mountain slope of which Lei Yin Cave is open. It is wide like a palace inside with the stone sutras carved by Jing wen monk mounted on the inside walls. There are 4 stone pillars in the cave with 1056 figures of Buddha carved on it called thousand-Buddha pillars. There are 4136 pieces of stone sutra stored in the 9 caves. Two pagodas on the stone sutra Mt were built in Tang Dynasty 1200 years ago.
At present time there are 7 pagodas of Tang Dynasty in the temple and 5 pogodas of Liao Dynasty and other upright stone tablets of Sui and Tang dynasties.
In the temple there are not only the 3 Buddhist utmosts but also the Buddhist patriach's relic kept here. Relic(Buddhist terminology) is the corpse or bones. It is said that it is the something round like pearls formed after the cremation of Sakyamuni remains. Two pieces of red fresh relics were found here on Nov.27,1981, andding happy and auspicious omen to the thousand-year ancient temple.
Yun Ju Temple is famous both at home and abroad and enoys good fame of the North Grand Temple with uique quiet and secluded surroundings and beautiful mountains and waters implicating strong Buddhist cultual characteristic.
